Soup Kitchen - "Hot soup days"- Join Young Muslims at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto Soup Kitchen.
A very important lesson was learned in the days following the Tsunami disaster. Upon reflection, one is reminded of life's simple blessings and the realization that we have taken so much for granted. Blessings such as our ability to breathe, having a place to sleep, and having access to an abundance of food in order to satisfy our unique cravings. Although the catastrophe in South East Asia served as a reminder to us all, the reality is that we need not go to Indonesia or Sri Lanka to witness human suffering. Homelessness and destitution exist right here in our local communities. The Hot Soup Days (HSD) initiative was born out of the need to fulfill our Islamic obligation to help others.
The Initiative
Launched as a pilot project on March 26 2005, HSD has evolved into a Saturday meal service. Islamic Foundation of Toronto (IFT) opens its doors to the public every Saturday from 11am to 1pm for a free meal served in a restaurant-type atmosphere. With professional chefs, waiters, busboys and hosts, guests are treated to a luxurious experience. Upon their arrival guests are seated, served a nutritious appetizer followed by a freshly prepared meal complimented with baked desserts. Menu items have consisted of soups, sandwiches, pasta, chicken, fruits & vegetables. Dedicated volunteers arrive hours earlier to make the necessary preparations in order to ensure a memorable experience for our guests. Our kitchen further provides a delivery service to local shelters and also families who are unable to attend. HSD plays an important role in assisting these shelters help bridge the gap generally associated with under-funding.
What started out feeding 10 to 15 people, HSD currently provides nutritious meals to over 450 needy families on a weekly basis. The quality of the food and service has become so well renowned, that some of our guests travel great distances to be served.
